Brett Kollman’s DT rankings

I’m low on Kancey as a three down DT but if he can really change alignment like this then I’m actually much higher on him. How well he sets the edge is maybe still a question there. But he is good at block shedding.
Both of the comps he gave for Kancey playing that alignment (Tuck and Bennett) had more reach than Kancey, so I don’t know that he would be able to make the same alignment shift described in the video. If that’s what it takes to make him a three down player and he can get it done, I’m all for it. He would probably play best on the weak side defending against cutbacks, but teams could use motion to get our front out of order if we tried to protect him that way. It may be better to keep him inside in an under front.

That said, I don’t think there is any denying his potential as a 3-tech pass rusher or a one gap run defender, but I can understand the concerns about him getting targeted with double teams. Still, playing on third down, in the two minute drill, and/or with a second half lead would still give him plenty of valuable snaps in his first year.

Edit to mention that the third down role may not be a fit for us, we played a fair amount of odd fronts in obvious passing situations with two LB’s on the LOS. We played a nose over the center with the ends out wide, and the LB’s lined up over the guards would alternate between rushing and coverage to keep the offense off balance. Onyemata was typically the nose in those sets, which contributed to his perceived decline in pass rushing productivity. I don’t know that Kancey would be a good fit in that same alignment.
