If that's truly the case, then either...

a) the Saints did themselves NO favors by leaving Usama on the sidelines as much as they did in '07......

I don't think its odd at all being as how we were still in the hunt up until the end or close to it. You don't throw the project guys in until you are totally out but that doesn't mean Usama can't progress enough during the offseason to beat out David.
