Alvin Kamara pleads no contest to lesser misdemeanor charge, jury trial is cancelled; civil suit also settled on confidential terms
Do we know how much? 5M...500k? 250?
We don't know and probably won't - unless somebody violates the confidentiality clause in the settlement (which are quite common btw). But based on how personal injury cases go, I think we can put a range on it that is probably quite accurate.
We know that Greene suffered an orbital fracture and alleged injuries to his "shoulder and back", which are probably soft-tissue injuries. The plea arrangement suggests that Greene had about $100K in medical expenses, which could indeed be the case if he needed surgery for the orbital fracture or some other treatment that's more intensive or has a longer duration.
Presume he had no other long-term injuries, the trial/judgment value of the civil claim is somewhere in the $300K to $400K range. Taking into account that he elected to file in Orleans Parish, which I think is a discounting factor more than an amplifying factor, I'd say you would generically expect a settlement to be in that range because civil defendants rarely pay more than trial value in settlement - there would have to be some other factors pushing the value higher.
Of course, here you have that factor with the criminal case, which is a big interest for Kamara.
So that gives Greene leverage in the negotiation beyond basic trial value. But I don't think that gives Greene (and Buzbee) the right to ransom his consent to the plea deal for some exorbitant amount. It's patently unethical (violates rules of professional conduct) for an attorney to seek to influence a material witness's testimony through cash payment, and in a criminal case, it might also be illegal to extort payment in exchange for a refusal to testify. And I don't think the Vegas DA would sit back and support a process where the victim is holding his consent ransom for some unreasonable amount.
But presuming the attorneys involved stayed in their lanes, I wouldn't imagine that the Greene would be able to pull that much more out of Kamara - even doubling trial value still puts you at the $600K to $800K range, which I think is possible but might even be high. If I had to guess, I'd say in the $500K to $800K range, probably closer to the bottom than the top - and certainly anything beyond $1M sounds like wild fantasy to me.
