N/S Payton critiques old Broncos staff, says Jets are setting themselves up for a hard fall, etc.

Everything in that article reminds me what a great coach Payton is and I'm shocked at how so many here are forgetting the things he did when he first got here. Allow me to run through it:

"Sean Payton says Broncos analytics 'on a different level here"

This is not a (direct) dig on Saints analytics. It's to put the public spotlight on a well-funded analytics department that needs to perform better and it's a way of holding them to account publicly.

"I’m going to be pissed off if this is not a playoff team,”

This communicates to the team that he expects them to make the playoffs. Compare this to the "take it day by day", "punch-the-clock" approach Allen takes. What are the expectations for the Saints? Does anyone even know? Show up and hope for the best?

"It doesn’t happen often where an NFL team or organization gets embarrassed,” Payton said. “And that happened here. Part of it was their own fault, relative to spending so much (expletive) time trying to win the offseason – the PR, the pomp and circumstance, marching people around and all this stuff."

Do we not remember how much of the pomp and fluff Payton eliminated when he came here? Remember that Benson used to be _selling cars to the players_ after practice? Payton knows how to set boundaries with owners. Who gives a blip if they're embarrassed? They _should be embarrassed_.

With respect to Wilson, the only logical decision is to clean the slate, set boundaries and rebuild his confidence. Everything said there reflects that.

"Everything I heard about last season, we’re doing the opposite,” Payton said."

"When these baby iguanas are hatched, they pop their heads out of the sand and they’ve got to get to the cliffs,” he said. “There are runner snakes all around, and they feed off the babies. So, the message is, ‘We’ve got to hit the ground running. There’s a sense of urgency. Let’s hit the ground running.’ ”

These sorts of visual anchors and phrases are hallmarks of good motivational coaching and identity building. They're the Broncos, they should be running.
