When was the last time Russia really escalated?

NATO continues to escalate, Russia only responds with rhetoric.

Why? That is what I’ve spent the last few months trying to figure out.

Is Putin scared? Can they not afford it? Are they incapable? Does he want attrition? Is he backed in a corner backed only by pride? A little of all of the above? Are they out of options other than crossing some really big lines such as tactical nukes, sinking foreign ships or a direct attacks on NATO?

It seems Russia’s line in the sand has slowly been retreating to NATO’s will. Where does the line break or stiffen?
