People talk about trading down like we can do it easily, but they fail to recongnize the point you made about how the talent drops off after the 1st 8 picks and the next 15-20 players will have similar grades. If anything it's more likely that we trade up instead of trading down.

Well...if the next 15-20 players have similar grades, then we should take comfort in the fact that they will draft a defensive player, if they are unable to trade down, as there will not be an offensive player who is far and away better than the best defensive player. Logical?
