What is the definition of “Creole?”
The original, criollo(a), meant a person of full Spaniard descent born in the Viceroyalty of New Spain, I believe as early as the 16th century. The word comes from "cría" , one of its meanings being offspring.
As more European nationalities came to America (meaning the continent) they adopted the word, first I think was the Portuguese... then it extended to people of other European nationalities and even the people of Africa that were brought in as slaves (at least within the Viceroyalty of New Spain).
