Last episode (I think) Shin made some comment along the lines of “If this place is so great, why are they trying to leave” and his response was something along the lines of “or they’re escaping a power greater than theirs“. He’s gotta be chasing something down from the stories they previously mentioned.

TCW watchers will remember the ghost of qui gon sends yoda on an epic quest- he meets many witchy types but is sent to the wellspring of life - seemingly the birthplace of the Force (but maybe the birthplace of the light side)
It could be that Baylan is looking for- and intends to destroy- the dark side ‘wellspring’
