If Jayden Daniels declares we need to draft him.

IMO, Daniels is flying way under the NFL radar right now. I think the biggest positive for Daniels is how much he's improved in the last two years. Improvement doesn't usually happen without a player 'putting in the work'. Drew Brees was always a very hard worker on and off the field. If that is true of Daniels he could do well. Of course, he'd have to go to the right team/coach.

I feel like many of the talking heads are looking for the next Mahomes. Ummmm... right. Of the top QBs mentioned for this year's draft, Williams, Maye, Penix, Sanders, McCarthy, and Nix, Penix is the only one I'd want to drop a 1st on. Not saying one or more of the others won't make it too, but we know there are always misfires. Of that group: Williams looks like a typical Lincoln Riley QB - that doesn't usually transfer to top NFL talent (but can be decent). Maye actually looks a lot like Daniels to me, but I don't think he's as good. Nix shows a lot of skills and has improved a lot - kind of prototypical - but is in a system where he often seems to gun it in to the first option (which works in Oregon but won't in the NFL). Can he transition??? Dunno. Neither Sanders or McCarthy do it for me. A lot like Williams, they are improvisers but haven't really displayed some of the things they would need in the NFL. Those guys are really athletic, but sometimes they just look plain lucky.

So, I think Daniels will fall to the 2nd or 3rd round just because a lot of scouts fall in love with athleticism. And that's fine - that's what a lot of top QBs have. But many other NFL QBs are simply just good, smart, guys that understand the game and work hard to improve (Brock Purdy, anyone?). Some team may realize that there are good QBs to be had in the later rounds and grab a gem (it's almost certain that one of them will). Maybe that will be Daniels.
Yes, Penix is having a great season as you and bcclemns have pointed out. He’s tanked 1st in PFF grades. I would take him over any other QB.

Improvement is underrated.

Purdy is good on SF in that system but he is rarely tested by opposing defenses. Have to make him throw deep. That offense is all about window dressing and pre snap reads. It still takes intelligence and skill but Purdy won’t fit into every scheme without really good talent and coaching.

Daniels has improved his vision and field reads. Of course college is not the NFL but every QB will have to learn. That’s why I wouldn’t mind drafting him in the second round and letting him sit and learn.
