the best approach would be just have more employees monitoring them. You can still have less cashiers, and more registers. I know the ones around here they usually have one person monitoring like 10 registers. May have a 2-1 or 3-1 ratio would be beneficial. seems like if they just tear them out, thats a lot of money wasted, probably more than they are losing..
if they are gonna go back to a lack of open man powered registers, i feel like that would entice people back to the local stores where they don't have to wait 20 minutes to check out, offsetting that 2% or so that they are losing with self checkout.
