Rodgers-Cromartie...4.28 40 yard dash' (merged)

I don't necessarily disagree with you on any points. My only thought is that we have spent at least the last 2 first round picks on players that have yet to live up to their pre-draft hype. Say what you want about Reggie, I don't call him a flop, but he's far from living up to his potential.

I just wonder if the Saints, what I consider to be a "win now" team, can continually afford to draft very gifted players and let them take 2-3 or more years to develop to their potential....as opposed to a Willis, Ryans, etc that came in and had an immediate impact, albeit for poor teams.

I think we as fans are win now but not the FO. I think Loomis and Payton are building for the future. I also think Benson is committed to Payton for at least 3-4 more years to allow him the chance to do that.

We've done very well with 1st rounders the past 8 years. The only bust was Sullivan, and that was a need pick. The only other disappointment was Stallworth, but at least he was an good WR for us while he was here (and we got a 3rd rounder for him after we got rid of him). As for Bush, even if he never becomes a dominant runner, I think we'll more then get our value out of him in other ways. Players like Grant, Smith, Brown, Bush, and Deuce are major building blocks for us. I think Meachem will come into his own this year and be the dominant number 1b guy we need.

Theres alot of things to bash the FO over, but we've made some great 1st round picks. 3 probowlers (4 if you count grant, it was a sham he didn't make it in 04) out of our last 7 picks. Pretty good.
