I'm not saying go mass hysteria and create another McMartin. But I'd rather be an obnoxious or over careful parent.

I still remember the time I wanted to go to an amusement park with my friend whose mother was going to drive. My mom wouldn't let me go and I threw a fit but she didn't back down. Years later I learned that my mom knew she was an alcoholic and while she couldn't stop her from driving, she could stop her kid from being in a car with her.

When my son was growing up (like pre-high school years), I never dropped him off and left him at practices or games (karate then soccer). A parent or grandparent was always present. Once he got into playing high school basketball, he was old enough to advocate for himself and knew better and was still being picked up/dropped off by his parents or grandma until he could drive himself or had teammates that were driving to drop him off.
