I think best case scenario is a player for player trade of equal value that yields a position of need for the Saints that can be a plug and play guy from day one this year, 2024. Either an Offensive Lineman, Defensive Tackle, or Wide Receiver could be roster changers. A high draft pick in 2025 would be my 2nd choice.

Rosters are perpetually changing. The NFL is a win now league if you're a mid-tier team or better. Thinking that you are stock piling talent by moving a player for a single 2nd or 3 round draft choice to develop a roster to compete 2-3 years from now is a bit optimistic.

Three years from now the Saints more than likely will have moved on from their current core roster of aging players that include Cam Jordan, Alvin Kamara, Demario Davis, Ryan Ramczyk, Derek Carr, Taysom Hill, Tyrann Mathieu, Nathan Sheppard, and others.

Meanwhile, the core group of younger players will be moving near the criteria of the aforementioned as well as looking to get paid. In the meantime, there is the unknown, which includes injuries, busts, free agency departures and coaching changes. Three years is an eternity in the current landscape of the NFL.

With that said, a high draft choice in 2025 that can step in and play day one makes you better in 2025 but it doesn't guarantee the team as a whole will be in better shape to compete at a higher level in future years to come.

I tend to think the only kind of player we could trade for is a guy of a similar age to Lattimore and I think this team needs to get younger and cheaper in order to get the cap under control an build for the future. At this point, the ceiling for this team is likely winning the division or making the playoffs and maybe getting one win in the playoffs. This team just isn't ready to compete for the NFC and probably won't be for 2 or 3 years. So, I think you take the chance on a 2nd round pick that could become a foundation piece in 2 or 3 years when you are ready to compete rather than an older talent that another team was willing to give up that will likely be on the downside of his career, and expensive, by the time you are ready to compete.

I think that fits better into how Loomis has operated this off season. I think its clear that he is looking to the future and cutting current costs now while remaining good enough to win the division if things go right.
