Lattimore - Possible Trade Partners Now That June 2nd Has Passed

In a June 2nd, 2024 article by David Latham, Managing Editor of Last Word On Sports he discusses several potential trading partners the Saints may trade Marshon Lattimore. Excerpts below:

Jaguars, Saints Connected In Trade For Four-Time Pro Bowler

The New Orleans Saints Are Likely To Trade Cornerback Marshon Lattimore, And The Jacksonville Jaguars Could Be An Ideal Suitor.
June 2nd is officially here, increasing the odds of a Marshon Lattimore trade. For those unfamiliar with the workings of the NFL salary cap, teams can trade a player after June 1st and spread the dead money on said player’s contract over two years. This effectively means that teams can more easily create cap space and incentivize moves in what would otherwise be the dead part of the offseason.

Several reliable reporters have covered the possibility of a Marshon Lattimore trade for months now, but nobody expected it to happen before June 2nd. According to OverTheCap, trading Lattimore early in the offseason would’ve resulted in a loss of $16.6 million in much-needed cap space. However, now New Orleans can clear just south of $4 million in cap space, so Lattimore’s days with the team could be coming to an end. According to Bleacher Report‘s Matt Holder, the Jaguars could make a move for the veteran.

Of course, Jacksonville won’t be the only team interested in a Marshon Lattimore trade. There aren’t enough good cornerbacks to go around in today’s pass-happy NFL and Lattimore could be a key contributor for a few contenders or could help solidify some rocky secondaries throughout the league.

The article above lists several teams that could use the services of Lattimore including the Jaguars, Chiefs, Texans, Commanders, Chargers, and Patriots.

Really, outside of the NFC South, just about every NFL team could potentially be a suitor.

Excerpts from the Bleacher Report Article by Matt Holder cited above:
  1. The Jaguars currently have about $34.2 million in cap space, the third-most of any team. That's more than enough to take on Marshon Lattimore's $14.6 million cap hit, and he could help the Jags get back to being a Super Bowl contender like they were expected to be last year.
The New Orleans Saints would save only about $4 million in cap space this year with a post-June 1 trade of Lattimore, but they'd clear an additional $10.8 million in 2025. That's huge for a team that's already expected to begin next offseason nearly $85 million over the cap.

If the Saints are open to trading Lattimore it makes sense to have waited until June 2nd passed to open discussion on the subject. With that date now being passed the next important date is prior to week 1 of the regular season which is when the Saints will be required to pay Latt a guaranteed option bonus of $13.79 Million. Trading him before week 1 could transfer that responsibility to the new team. This move would also reduce the dead money and allow the Saints to spread it over the 2024 and 2025 seasons. If the Saints were to make this move in a trade for future draft pick(s) they could clear almost $4 million in cap space. The trade deadline is on November 5th, 2024, after the completion of Week 9. I'd prefer to see a player for player trade filling a need for the Saints who can contribute in 2024 and beyond completed before the start of training camp this year.

The articles below better explain the ramifications of the Saints trading Lattimore.
From an article May 21, 2024 written by Dallas Robinson of ProFootballNetwork.Com

Lattimore’s guaranteed option bonus is worth $13.79 million and must be exercised before Week 1 of the 2024 regular season. If the Saints trade Lattimore after June 1 but before his option hits their salary cap, they would only take on between $10-$13 million in dead money.

Moving Lattimore could make sense for New Orleans, which just selected CB Kool-Aid McKinstry in Round 2 of the 2024 NFL Draft and also has corners Paulson Adebo and Alontae Taylor on the roster and needs long-term salary cap space.

Where could Lattimore land? The Las Vegas Raiders, Jacksonville Jaguars, Indianapolis Colts, Houston Texans, Green Bay Packers, and Minnesota Vikings could be among the contenders interested in the veteran CB.

The Salary Cap Costs of Trading Marshon Lattimore

Should the Saints make this trade?

I think so. The Saints are busy digging out of a massive salary cap hole and they clearly saw Lattimore as one of the few pieces they are willing to move so if the situation presents itself they should go for it. If they do not make the trade this year it may only be harder to move him in 2025 and there is no guarantee that he would be willing to modify his contract to help the Saints with the cap after they already dangled him out there for a trade.
