Triplett: Spencer Rattler has started ‘rolling’ in Saints camp, but preseason looms as ultimate test

1st round talent.... Passes over for silly reasons... He's going to look good/great in pre-season.... Only question is - Will DA make him #2 - or be loyal to JH out of some sense of seniority. And that's no knock on JH either... he's going to be a solid backup in the NFL IMO - He's just not as talented, or have the potential be a top level QB1 in the NFL like SR does. This will be obvious when the games start because Spencer is a gamer - and is better when things break down - which is like 70% of being a top level NFL QB.... It's hardly ever clean and goes to plan. (Which is why your most successful NFL QBs are either guys that buy time and make off platform throws - Or guys that have elite timing and anticipation and get the ball out on time - Spencer can potentially do both)

I am really excited to have a young QB that can make off schedule throws. That, along with red zone performance, IMO is what separates solid NFL QBs from good/great NFL QBs. Almost all of the QBs in the NFL can pick a D apart if they have time to sit in the pocket. The key is what can you do what things break down. And Rattler has the arm to make some throws that even Carr, who has a good arm, can't make.

As far as who is #2, I don't think it really matters much at this point. Carr is starting unless or until he gets hurt. If that happens, I could see some sense in putting in Haener to allow Rattler the full year to get ready without getting killed as a rookie. Then again, if Rattler shows to know the offense better, then maybe he ends up the guy to step in for Carr.
