Derek Carr stayed and made sure everyone got an autograph at yesterday’s open practice
I don’t think it’s the stats, most of the fan base just doesn’t think he connects and embraces the city. Like Drew did… hell Winston was terrible but was a fan favorite. Carr needs to come to New Orleans and embrace the city.
Carr doesn’t need to embrace the city any more than he already has. Saints fans need to ease up on this “one of us” standard that they seem to drop on players.
Derek Carr has done charitable work in the city and meet and greets with fans since being here. What else is he supposed to do?
People seem to forget that the second the last minute of football was played each season - Drew Brees put his family on a plane and went to his “real” home in San Diego. Where is Drew, who embraced the city of New Orleans, living since the day he retired? San Diego.
Carr made the mistake of saying he ate Chipotle when he got to New Orleans and some people have legitimately used that against him since then.
I’ll say this, if I wasn’t from a city and had somewhere to be and had to grab a bite to eat, I sure would be looking for a chain restaurant that I recognized. I can also tell you with New Orleans reputation for crime, I sure as hell wouldn’t have wandered into some random local joint.
Carr seems like a genuine dude and he’s better than any of the abysmal QBs that have taken snaps since Drew left - by far. But he’s not “one of us” (whatever that means) so he gets crapped on by a segment of the fan base. It’s sad.
Carr got the tar beaten out of him last season and all he did was get up every time, beaten and battered and played because he wanted to win and bring the Saints to the playoffs. He doesn’t owe the city anything else.
