Jake Haener was born on March 10th, 1999, in Danville, California, where he attended Monte Vista High School. During his high school career, he threw for 8,464 yards and a school-record 90 touchdowns. He committed to the University of Washington to attend college and play football.
After redshirting his first year at Washington in 2017, Haener appeared in four games as a backup to Jake Browning in 2018. In 2019, Haener transferred to California State University, Fresno. After sitting out his first year at Fresno State due to transfer rules, Haener became the starter in 2020. He remained the starter in 2021. On November 30, 2021, Haener entered the NCAA transfer portal. On December 8, Haener withdrew from the transfer portal and returned to Fresno State.
During his college career Haener appeared in 32 games, starting 29 of them with a 21-8 record as a starter. He completed 740 passes on 1,085 attempts, a 68.2 completion percentage for 9,120 yards with 68 touchdowns and 18 interceptions with a passer rating of 156.2.
Haener made the initial opening day roster for the Saints to start the 2023 season. However, in early September, it was revealed he failed a drug test earlier that summer, testing positive for a banned performance enhancing substance. Haener was suspended the first six weeks of the season.
He released a statement: "I still do not know how the substance got into my body, as none of my supplements or prescribed medications contain the banned ingredient", nonetheless subsequently stating "I must take full responsibility for the failed test"
His mother Julie Haener was a long-time anchor at KTVU-TV in Oakland from 1997-2024 and was an anchor in Fresno in the early 1990s.
On July 26, 2024, Haener announced that he had been diagnosed with skin cancer. He underwent surgery in early August to have it removed and had 32 stitches put in the right cheek of his face. He only missed one practice and then on the following Saturday, August 10th, 2024, he played sparingly in a preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals where he completed 13 passes for 107 yards, a long completion of 58 yards.
Haener is entering his 2nd year in the NFL. For the 2nd straight year, he has made the Saints 53-man roster. He hasn't yet thrown a pass in a regular season NFL game. He is in a tight battle for the #2 QB job with rookie Spencer Rattler. Coach Dennis Allen hasn't yet named which player will be the #2 QB to start the year.
