Saints at the top of Davante Adams’ wish list [Raiders trade Adams to Jets for conditional 3rd ; Jets paying Adams’ entire remaining salary]
I just don't know how to feel about this. Part of me says to hell with it, yolo, let's get him. That's the emotional Who Dat in me. Real life Madden baby! Let's go! Davante Adams is awesome!
But the rational side of me is like, what are we talking about right now? How is this a thing? This isn't Madden. We can't be out there making trades willy nilly. Our cap is a wreck and I don't think this will help. Davante Adams is great and all but if our O line can't protect Carr then how much of a difference can a WR make?
So I've prepared two reactions. If we do indeed trade for Adams it will be the single greatest trade in Saints history. We got him for a bargain when you really think about it. The NFC is wide open and with Adams we could very well win the whole damn thing.
If he goes somewhere else then thank god. We dodged a bullet on this one. They gave up way too much for a 31 year old WR on a mega deal. Once again some team saved the Saints from themselves. With our O line issue we were going to be a legitimate contender.
Getting Adams makes sense because: We have a few players that are in the last couple yrs of playing @ a high level. Demario, 2 yrs most. AK 2yrs super outside chance of 3. Honey Badger, 2 yrs most. Taysom, 2yrs most. Lattimore 2yrs then he'll start to decline if he has not before then. Carr, 2-3 yrs and the decline starts.
It makes sense to take as much advantage of all those players while they are here mostly under contract. Signing Adams and reworking his contract into a 2-3 yr deal puts him in line with the rest of those mentioned.
I know I know all the " we need OL help " and the we need a pass rusher " talk. That's why I see us giving LV a 2nd and maybe a 6th in consideration of them eating a good portion of Tay's salary this yr.
Then we are free to use next yrs 1st and 3rd to address the OL and a pass rusher.
It also means we extend AK which is what we all want.
What all this means is that I think we become the NFC south favorite THIS yr, and a very good shot to at least make the playoffs and also to win at least 1 game. We WILL get McCoy and Ruiz back along with getting healthy in time for the weakest part of our schedule.
But just as important it sets us up to be contenders in the NFC for the next 2 yrs . It puts us very much in the all -in mode like we were when we had Brees for the next 2 yrs.
IF we have not at least made it to the SB by 26 or at the very least 27, then I'm all for BLOWING it up, New HC , QB , RB. Get the cap manageable, keep the younger core players and rebuild
