Saints at the top of Davante Adams’ wish list [Raiders trade Adams to Jets for conditional 3rd ; Jets paying Adams’ entire remaining salary]

I'm not even sure what this nebulous "window is shut" is referring to. What window? And how exactly is it shut? Window for....having a decent team? Having a playoff team? Getting to the SB? That's all based on pretty subjective criteria. Having everything in place guarantees nothing.

It's a parity driven league and it all matters, talent, injuries, luck, coaching and on and on. The margins are thin and one key injury can derail a season for most teams. KC is one of the few truly dominant teams out there. Coaching has something to do with it, but their talent level is also undeniable.

Great post.

This dreamland where we have all this cap space and suddenly can get a perfect roster that so many people seem to think we must have in order to be called a “contender” are so far-fetched. Just as it does with our current cap management style, it’s going to come down to acquiring the right players and coaches.

Having extra money just increases the risk of free agent busts. Look at how some of teams that annually have loads of cap space are doing. It’s not a magic cure-all. Also, managing the cap the way some people here want us to only creates a different type of financial restriction, one that limits how we operate in order to keep the illusion of a healthy cap.

As you said, a key injury can derail a season, but I will also counter and say that on the other end of the spectrum, if you have an average, middle of the pack team, one well-timed draft or lucky free agent signing/trade can completely change your fortunes.

We gotta stop acquiring busts, and we also need to coach better. Football isn’t played on accounting ledgers and spreadsheets. Our financial situation didn’t create the roster holes or have us waste years with an offensive coordinator in over his head, or make bad game day coaching decisions or draft multiple busts, or have an annual injury list a mile long, nor did it make Younghoe Koo make a 58 yard field goal or make two defensive backs run into each other to allow a critical big gain by Dallas Goedert.
