Spencer Rattler named starting QB ; Jay Glazer reports Rattler expected to start next 3-4 games (month) until Carr’s return
I am a terrible judged of talent - especially when it comes to NFL QBs.
I remember when people were going gaga over Pat Mahomes and I was like “he’s just another one of those college QBs who has goofy stats because he plays for a team that throws 60 times a game”. Even when LSU played Texas Tech in the Cotton Bowl, I failed to see an NFL star in the making.
Same with Lamar Jackson. I couldn’t see what everyone else was seeing with him.
So, having admitted my putrid eye for talent - I’m curious what all the people so pumped about Rattler see in him that makes them feel like he’s a star in the making?
I want to understand why he’s different than all the other college QBs who put up good numbers and are little more than footnotes in the league.
I want to understand what makes him more than a, say, Desmond Ridder type player?
I want to be able to understand why everyone is so jazzed that our starter is injured (not the injury itself but the opportunity it presents for Rattler).
I want to see beyond my clearly poor eye for talent.
Enlighten me, friends!
I feel you. Have the same Problem with a lot of guys. The last one was Matt Corral. I really thought that he'll be something special. But heart alone isn't enough in the NFL - so I get that meanwhile.
I also wasn't really pumped when we selected Rattler in the draft. But this was because of his behavior at QB1, which was everything I really noticed about him. I call myself somewhat of an SEC fan, but no team in particular. Maybe the Gators, but that's mainly because of a few Florida vacations and two games I saw in Gainesville. So I saw some Gamecocks games from time to time (isn't that easy to follow College Football in Austria - believe me) but it was like the TV was on, but "I'm anywhere in the house but in front of the TV" type of things.
But after the draft I did some research, like many here I think. And I thought: "Okay, that's value in the 5th". He had a horrendous O-Line at SC, he played some sort of a pro style offense, he has a tremendous arm, he has heart, leadership and isn't afraid to take hits. Then he played the preseason and you clearly saw, that there is a spark going through the entire team. I know .. he faced 2nd and 3rd stringers, but he also played with our 2nd and 3rd stringers. He made that offense roll. And you saw the difference in the team when he took the field and when Heaner was out there. It was different.
I'm the last one who thinks that Rattler goes out there and made this team look like contenders. There will be growing pains, there will be some really bad reads and throws and he will make Rookie mistakes, but I do think that he can develop in a CJ Stroud type of Player.
On the other side, there was my Corall thing … so what do I know. So, as I said, I feel you. But let's hope the best.
