Yep, you got it- a monitor lizard.. the one i saw is on the smaller side, i saw one the other day that was much larger but i was unable to get a pic before that one skidaddled.. and apparently the other park (other than the one I frequent) is completely overrun with them every morning.. which seems a little terrifying .
