Nick Underhill: Saints Might Not Move on from DA

This. Let's say ML gets rid of DA. Think about what that would mean for ML. ML knows that we are going to be a bad team for at least 2 more years after this season. If he were to get rid of DA, that would mean that ML starts catching all the bullets. By keeping DA around, ML gets to deflect most of the blame. Truth is that ML should be shouldering most of the blame already. DA is a human shield for ML and every year DA stays is a year for Loomis to hide from the truth.

I disagree. Look at this thread. Look at this board. Basically every one of us agrees that DA should be fired. And because it hasn't happened yet, the board has turned on Loomis and is calling for his head. I suspect it's the same in the fan base at large. The easy way to deflect that blame is to hire a new head coach and tear the team apart. That buys Loomis at least 3 more years because it's a new head coach and they are rebuilding. Refusing to fire DA and start new actually puts Loomis more in the cross-hairs of fans than firing DA and tearing the team apart.

GMs have been firing head coaches and hiring new ones since time began to buy themselves a few more years in the job. I think Loomis legitimately thought, and maybe still thinks, DA can turn this around. I think he's tragically wrong and needs to go if he doesn't fire DA at the end of this year. But I don't think he's doing it to deflect the blame. If he is, it's not working at all because fans are now calling for his head.
