They haven't been able to run the ball inside. On their 1st possession Kamara had his longest run since 2022, a 23 yarder. On Hills first attempt he gained 8 yards. The Saints had the ball in the Chargers territory at the 47 with a 2nd and 2. Kamara got stuffed for no gain running up the middle. On 3rd and 2 another Kamara run up the middle was held to just a yard. On 4th and 1 the Saints punted.
During the week leading up to the game Kubiak commented that Hill looked energized, and it was great to have him back. He is supposed to be a major part of this offense. He had 4 rushing attempts and 2 receptions and attempted 1 pass that was completed. He only had 29 offensive snaps out of the 73, 40%. They didn't indicate that he was less than 100% and would be on a pitch count. He didn't look less than 100%. The very 1st Saints offensive play they had Hill block one on one which he made a kickout block that helped spring Kamara for the 23 yard run. However, they didn't use him as a lead blocker between the tackles where he would have to block a LBer filling the hole. Someone needs to remind the coaching staff about the magic that happens when Hill gets 8 to 10 touches in a game.
Until they get that portion of their DNA back, they're still toothless on offense. Don't have an explosive downfield threat either. Hopefully MVS gives us a little of that.
Hopefully MVS can run some deep routes to free up Olave more than he has been since Shaheed got injured. If the Saints actually made some mid to deep completions it would not only open up the run game somewhat but would make some of the underneath targets more available.
