Derek Carr is still top ten in QBR this season per ESPN
He has a similar problem as Jameis Winston. Winston will make bad throws to receivers he shouldn't, and so does Carr. To put it simply, they sometimes try to play like Brees, thinking they can fit the ball in a very narrow window to a covered receiver that may even be double teamed. And they simply can't. Neither is good enough. That kind of talent is rare. Think back 25 years, maybe 4 or 5 QB's could do that in total.
It's frustrating for fan's to watch. Carr's upside over Winston is defensive reads, audibles, and he doesn't force those throws quite as often as Winston. Those small differences are the difference between a top 15 QB, and being a backup.
We as fans simply act like there is a giant skill difference between good QB's and backups and that's simply further from the truth. A handful of correct defensive reads, 3 or so correct audibles, and knowing when you can throw the ball into tough coverage vs when to throw it away just a few times a game amounts to a large gap in being a top half QB vs a backup.
