I don't understand it


its social media coupled with anonymity - where folks can go online, say some really really stupid stuff, get a bunch of "likes" ( ignore the negative replies ) and that produces some sort of satisfaction for them.

There are little to no consequences for being stupid on social media. Sure, you will hear stories of a person getting fired for social media posts, but thats far and few between.

20 years ago, you had to SIT DOWN, write a letter, and MAIL IT to the editor/news agency in HOPES it gets read.

Today you can respond immediately to their web page reviews, or social media platform. Takes 30 seconds AND will be seen by 100s of 1000s of people. Many of whom will "like" your post, boosting your status.
