Mark Gastineau confronts Brett Favre for allowing Strahan to break Sack Record (merged)
Tainted records you say?
Drew Brees set the single season passing yardage record in 2011.
Peyton Manning would break it by 1 yard a couple seasons later.
OR DID HE? The pass that Peyton threw was his last ‘completion’ of the season. It was a ‘pass’ to Wes Welker that netted a few yards.
You are probably wondering why I’m quoting the words ‘completion’ and ‘pass’.
It’s because the play in question was NOT a forward pass.
The ball was hiked and Peyton threw a swing ‘pass’ to Welker. In replays the ball was thrown backwards behind the LOS.
In replays you could tell it was technically a lateral.
The Broncos were blowing out the opposition and Peyton never played the 2nd half.
By the time it was midway through the 4th quarter there was buzz on Twitter about the ‘pass’. People were freaking out. It was clearly NOT a forward pass, and many were wondering if the Broncos caught wind of it and would send Peyton back into the game.
They didn’t.
In the days following, Elias Sports Bureau (in a now deleted post) said that while they could not confirm it was a forward pass they would not remove those yards from Manning’s stats due to “fairness”. All because they said that if Peyton and the Broncos knew of the potential error that he would have simply re-entered the game and threw another pass.
Good luck finding records of that Elias statement and even better luck finding the replay of that record setting ‘pass’
