Falcons expected to cut Kirk Cousins in offseason

Not really. You can’t win in this league without a QB. Kirk is who he is. They decided to pay him and draft their heir to the throne. Not all investments are good ones, but they felt like they didn’t want to get behind the eight ball, in a division that can anyone’s for the foreseeable future. Just reality talking. I hate them and I hope everything blows up in their faces, but it’s reality
You don't tamper with a QB, lose drafts picks because of it, sign him to a huge deal and then draft his replacement. No matter how you slice it, they were wrong. If you draft your heir apparent, then you shouldn't have signed the other guy to a huge deal because you should want your heir to start before the contract is up with the other guy. Oh, and let's not forget they signed Kirk AFTER he tore his achilles.
