Odds of Rizzi Getting Permanent Job and, If So, What Type of Contract

I don’t know that we even know who will make the decision. Gayle? Loomis? Will Loomis even be here? If Gayle makes the final call, who will she consult? I was impressed when she sought input from the team leaders when she let DA go. Will the players secretly rally to keep Rizz and or the OC? Or maybe rally for a fresh start? Maybe Drew will be on her “committee?” Too many unknowns. The process will tell us a lot.

I would bet that Loomis will make the decision and will make the hiring with permission from Gayle. If it's done any other way then it would mean Gayle has lost confidence in Loomis and should fire him.

I think the players likely will rally behind Rizzi. They like him and they know him. But I don't think that's the right way to make the choice. Too often players, like everyone else like the status quo and fear change. But sometimes you just have to shake things up. Even if Rizzi is a solid coach, this team needs a fresh start in the worst way. If that's not in the front office then it certainly needs to happen with the coaching staff. The only guys I would consider bringing back from the current staff are Benton, Dennison, Hodges, and Brian Young. And those are all dependent on what scheme we are going to run on either side of the ball.

Still, I think Rizzi has a 60/40 shot at getting the job at this point. And if he does, I think he gets a 4 or 5 years deal. Giving him anything less would send a signal to the players that you don't know if he is the right guy for the job and that's a recipe for failure. How can they respect a guy who is really just a long term interim coach?
