Odds of Rizzi Getting Permanent Job and, If So, What Type of Contract

Frankly, there’s very little chance of a win tonight unless something really, really, really strange happens. A loss tonight tells me nothing about Rizzi. I suspect that many of us are conflicted about Rizzi. We like the passion and the superior quality of his special teams coaching. But he does represent the ancien regime. And he’s totally inexperienced at the pro level or even at a top level college program as an offensive or defensive coordinator.

It’s a perplexing situation because we hope that the new coach would retain Rizzi as Special Teams Coordinator—but I don’t think an external hire would accept that kind of condition. And would Rizzi accept what would be in effect a demotion?

I’m inclined toward the “new blood” view. The “continuity” idea proved to be a disaster. It would be ideal if the single high quality segment of the team—special teams— could be retained.
