TB12 signed with TB in March of 2020. The NFL draft was in April of 2020. Drew announced his return for his final season in February of 2020. That right there, should have alerted SP and the FO, to get a QB. Especially if SP knew he was coming back the following year.

I think Payton believed that either Winston or Taysom could do the job. And, once Drew came back, Payton wanted to get OL help for Drew after a major issue on the interior OL the year before. He probably would have done the same for Brady.

Ruiz was a bad pick at that spot, but that was his intent. And frankly, that entire draft was messed up because it was the COVID year where they could go out and talk to or interview players. All the meetings were by Zoom and there is no way you can get a good feel for a guy that way. Everyone had to just draft on the tape because they couldn't know the intangibles.

Personally, I wanted them to draft Jackson, Hurts, and Love when they all fell down the boards but Payton wanted to build to win now.
