Head Coach if there is no GM change

While Loomis has his faults, I think he works well with his HC's. Loomis and Payton had a great relationship and Loomis was able to make money moves to get key FA's here if Payton wanted them. Loomis even worked well with Allen.

Yes we are strapped for money on the cap, but if a new HC comes in and really needs/wants a few players, I don't think Loomis would just say no unless there was no way to manipulate the salary cap to get said player or the player was just demanding too much money.

The Saints ownership under the Benson's have been pro-coach and player. There are plenty of teams like Dallas and Carolina where the Owner or GM run the team how they want and the HC has to play along. The Saints are not that way and any HC they hire will have his say on how to run the team and which players to keep, sign, or let go (again salary cap dependant).

Our main deterrents for an HC are obviously our salary cap issues, aging veterans we can't cut, and a small market.
I think this is accurate, but I do wonder if any decent HC prospect would look at that and still wonder why Loomis has not helped his head coaches build a better foundation these last many years. Coaches want job security and that comes with leading a winning franchise with proper team management. Depth issues, salary cap issues, personnel issues, everything that has lead to the Saints landing in this position after having one of the best records in football for over a decade has to be cause for concern even if you know you’ll get to bring in the people you really want.

I think a discerning coach would want a GM who they trust to use their expertise to guide the organization in the right way while ALSO giving them the leeway to build their way. It’s a fine balance.

And yes I do realize Loomis brought in Brees/Payton who are responsible for those glory years. But it cannot be discounted that everything he did after bringing them in only lead to 1 Super Bowl and directly lead to where we find ourselves now.
