He didn't come up through the ranks. He was never a coordinator. He had a few seasons as an inside linebacker coach and then Kraft decided he was the guy.

He was clearly out of his depth even with basic game management stuff. He didn't handle the press well. He threw his own players under the bus.

He was a bad coach. How much he knows about the game is irrelevant. Plenty of former players have busted as coaches.
Mayo was never a coordinator. It's almost always a bad move to promote a guy with no OC or DC experience to HC. And especially a guy with so little coaching experience .
I mean we are saying this but at the same time, Vrabel was a DC for a single season and the Texans had the worst defense in the NFL that season before he got a head coaching job taking over a 9-7 team. I'm not saying that Mayo was some great coach but some of these takes...lol
