I've developed this half baked theory that there's a weird thing going on in the con economy now when it comes to guests. The biggest cons are getting bigger and bigger and bringing in more and bigger names as guests, which is both keeping them busier and elevating their asking price. As a result, mid to smaller size cons are increasingly unable to compete for those guests financially and are getting left behind.
Look at Pensacon, for example. It was a midsized con with a solid growth trajectory for several years, but look at this dire arse lineup of headliners they've announced so far for a show that's in a month:
People have even commented on some of their social media posts about what a bunch of nobodies they've got this year.
Then you have Louisiana Comic Con which is in a about two months. I don't want to dogpile on them, especially since one of their representatives has posted here before. I want them to do well. But they were once another solid midsized con with a growth trajectory and now look at their guest list this year:
I mean....I know that not every con is big enough to bring in A listers like Fan Expo or Reed Pop shows, but it really does seem like the guest lists for these mid to smaller sized cons have absolutely cratered in the last couple of years.
