Report: Vrabel's OC could be McDaniels [mod edit]

I agree that Loomis is not looking for a "yes" man to be head coach. Loomis does not come from a personnel background like, say, Bill Polian and has always been willing to give his head coaches more authority than some other general managers.

I also do not believe that retaining certain assistants is an absolute condition on getting a job offer. If Mike Vrabel says I want to come to New Orleans, but I want to name my staff, there would be no problem. But unquestionably in the interviews, there will be a discussion of what coaches the candidate would try to hire as assistants. My guess is that in that discussion, Loomis may say the team has two or three assistants the organization thinks highly of and asks whether the candidate would consider retaining those coaches. To use Klint Kubiak as an example, the candidate's response may be that I have always wanted coach X to be my offensive coordinator. Or it may be that I have heard only good things about Kubiak, and though I would need to visit extensively with him to ensure personal and philosophical compatibility, I would be open to visiting with and retaining him. The Saints could then weigh the responses in assessing which candidate it wants to pursue.
