It’s a team sport.
An offense that can’t move the ball and sustain drives directly impacts the defense. They’re barely getting rest & review time before being asked to go right back on the field again. The effects of reduced rest are obvious but having only 2-3 counting minutes of in-game preparation and review time means the players aren’t getting to see what the other offense is doing (broad brush, I’m sure there are specifics to personnel, alignment, and pre-snap calls that I can’t speak to specifically).
I’m honestly surprised that three-and-outs aren’t loudly tracked. In a league looking for ways to benefit offenses, being an offense that can’t keep the ball should be readily-available information, and being a defense subject to a pithy counterpart on offense should be readily provided to add important context to why they’re giving up more yards/points/first downs.
