Saints candidates Kellen Moore, Joe Brady [and Kliff Kingsbury] compared to Ben Johnson in offensive rankings
WOW we actually agree on something LOL
Yes and I’ll actually go a step further and concede that wether I (and apparently half the board) like it or not there doesn’t appear to be any major shakeups happening in the Saints FO or that would have likely already have happened in my opinion.
Which to me makes it that much more important that the next HC for our organization be as close to Sean Payton in a couple of ways. First, he needs to be able to have a vision, share, translate and motivate today’s players to buy in to that vision of what winning looks like. Basically a rebranding if you will of what “Saints” ball or the “Saints” culture/way looks like amongst every coach/player and staff.
Second, our next HC will need a bit of an edge, cockiness if you will that sets the tone that we’re done taking crap and we are going to once again start dictating how games are played in our terms, not the other way around.
Yes, I acknowledge that if you talk the talk, you have to walk the walk. SP then was able to assemble his staff and the right personnel that could and did prescribe to his mindset, his culture, his brand of ball. It’s a delicate balance for sure but when you get it right, it’s magical and we were lucky enough to witness it firsthand. Can it be duplicated?
I guess that’s the trouble I’m having when I think about Joe Brady, Ben Johnson, or Kelllen Moore. I just don’t know their personalities well enough I guess to make a fair assessment of if they can actually pull off what I think needs to happen to rebuild our franchise to get back to the SB. Do they have that fire like Dan Campbell, the intensity of a Sean Payton, the persona of an Andy Reid? Maybe, maybe we just haven’t seen it yet.
And yes, the same question could be legitimately asked of just about everyone that is currently scheduled for an interview. I understand that. It’s just for me, personally I knew Sean Payton when he coached in Philly, New York and Dallas and he just always seemed like he had a way about him. He progressed at each stop as he should but by the time he got to Dallas you could tell SP was not only ready to be a HC in the NFL it was if he was ready to come in and make other teams and owners regret not hiring him sooner.
He wasn’t just grateful for the opportunity. Sure he said that in his opening presser like every coach does but it’s what he didn’t say. It was the behind the scenes stuff that we would learn about after the fact to motivate the team. Yes “X’s and O’s” matter but it’s also attention to detail and that’s where I think initially SP changed many things and refocused the entire organization.
Personally I’d rather a HC that can relate to and maximize the talent of todays players while establishing a culture of pride, attention to detail, and playing all three phases with the intent on setting the tone each week. I’d keep Kubiack, roll with Carr as QB1, get another WR to go with Shaheed, Olave probably via FA. Yes we could certainly use another pass catching TE and a true slot WR but let’s assume we have Taysom for at least 1 more year.
Draft the best Safety available at #9. Find at least 2-3 O lineman in the draft that have played in a system as close to Kubiack’s system as possible. We definitely need a sure fire backup to McCoy. I think our RB room is okay actually, yes we need more edge guys and LBs. we will have to get creative with the draft, and what $$ we have in FA and lucky with undrafted FAs. I think if Adebo fully recovers we’re also decent at that position.
I don’t think our situation is as dire as it might seem. Yes, we need a leader. That’s where I go back to Brady, Johnson and Moore. Are they natural leaders? You tell me, because I haven’t seen that they are leaders, or maybe they just haven’t had the opportunity yet to show that they are.
