Loomis: Next Saints Head Coach will decide their own staff and direction at Quarterback

You’re worried about pushing $40m in dead money to next year while incurring an extra $30m in cap hit from keeping Carr around (not to mention paying him $30m).

We end up with less space over the next few years if we keep Carr around because we have to account for that $30m somewhere.
Paying him that 30 mil allows you to absorb some of those expiring contracts' dead money this year and gives you plenty of flexibility. You also have a legit QB on your roster for your veteran guys last year. 30 mil is the minimum salary for a starting QB. You have money to resign guys and move on free agents. Otherwise, your new coach will be completely hamstrung and unable to start forming his team. You can freely cut Carr next year and have the money to bring in a guy to compete.

You also have plenty of flexibility to June 1st cut him in 2026 if you need even more money, which they probably won't need. I'm not a fan of spending that big in free agency. It's how you acquire really bad contracts.

Trying to save that 30 mil will have lasting effects. You'll feel it this year and next (maybe longer with the player reputation you'll get), all while a new coach is trying (but unable) to bring in players for his scheme. It's not worth risking your organization and head coach.

They'll pay him 30 mil and restructure him. His play is worth that much and you'll have all the flexibility you need the next two years to build up your team.

Unless they find some big pay cuts or a generous trade partner it's not an option an organization would consider in the real world.
