Dexter: Original Sin
Looked for a thread on this and didn't see one posted yet...
Anyone else currently watching? I'm loving the series so far.
Patrick Gibson was a great casting choice for young Dex.
Most of the actors chosen to play younger versions of the original characters of the first show are good and frankly, in the case of Dexter, Laguerta etc. they almost look like younger versions of the actors themselves. I do get some sneeky, subconscious Sarah-Michelle Geller's character might be lot more nefarious or is involved in something very deep, dark and terrible due to her horse racing losses she's been making and well, maybe some organized crime/drug cartel organization got wind of it and is using that as Compromat. A few subliminal hints here and there plus perhaps some long-perceived anger at deep-rooted, institutional sexism on Miami Metro's Homicide division.
In the last episode, they did strongly suggest that Clark, a veteran MPD patrol officer who became friends with a young, intern Dexter, is a closested gay black man after Dexter sort of unknowingly ran into him outside of a downtown Miami LGBT nightclub and seem surprised to see Dexter was there.
The young actress playing a teenage Debra Morgan is good and talented but she does come across as a tad over-bearing and maybe trying a bit too hard to sound like what the OG actress, Jennifer Carpenter's version. I get it that this version of Debra isn't as mature but as impulsive, daring as Carpenter's Morgan was, she didnt swear like with every other word or syllable like this one does.
Patrick Morgan and Christian Slater are the unabashed stars of the show and really elevate the pace, mood and aura of the show. Slater's Harry Morgan does show more emotion, concern, and worry over the long-term ramifications of what his particular code of serial killer ethics to control and re-direct Dexter's spree-killing urges will do. He also senses that no matter how careful, well-planned, organized Dexter's M.O., eventually at some point, the worst-possible scenario happens: Dexter gets caught in the act by Debra or some other MPD colleague, like Laguerta, finally figures it all out or some combination of factors come into play and Dexter and Harry's plan is blown up. I think Harry Morgan knew it couldn't last forever and while Dexter managed to keep it mostly hidden for over two decades, the whole edifice collapsed anyway.
IMHO, Dexter's last real chance for long-term happiness and content to where he could retire his "Dark Passenger" for good ended when The Trinity Killer murdered Rita as his last victim before being done away by Dex. He had his wife, a newborn son, and two older step-kids he'd grown to like and he knew he couldn't keep juggling his work and professional lives with his deepest, darkest secret and he was going to abandon his vigilante serial killer role until Trinity upended everything. Dexter Morgan was never the same after Rita's murder and he was seperated from Rita's kids and had to raise Harrison alone plus he slowly became a lot more cavalier and reckless in observing Harry's code, taking unnecessary chances he never really did before.
