Can Trevor Penning play Left Guard?

Penning was never in contention for Guard. They signed an experienced starting Left Guard Lucas Patrick before minicamp.

The initial plan going into May was for Penning to compete with Fuaga at Left Tackle. But Fuaga ran away with the starting Left Tackle job from day 1 in rookie minicamp. Penning’s next options were compete for starting RT with Udoh or he would have became the top backup OT.
That's not totally accurate. Several coaches already confirmed (specificaly our OL Coach) that the plan for Penning was always to give hiim a fresh start at RT. I also don't think there was ever any competition. There were several moments during camp where Penning would have horrific days, but the next day he was with the 1's. It wasn't until late in camp that he started doing some 2nd team work, but I think that was so they could see who their best backup option was at RT.

Penning is upgradeable and a small nugget by Loomis that I hope comes to fruition is that when he was asked about Ram and what the contract alteration meant, he said it was Ram's choice. Potentially he could comeback.

As far as my opinion, Penning is a backup RT and 6th OL in heavy formations.. It would be nice if the team could secure the services of a vet LT, so they could move Fuaga back to RT. In the event of injury Fuaga could slide back to LT and Penning would be RT.

It'll be fun to see how they handle it.
