Your differential allows the wheels to rotate at different speeds to compensate for the distance travelled by the inside and outside wheels during a turn. Your inside wheel rotates slower than your outside wheel. Lockers lock your differential to allow true 4-wheel drive or, in the case of drag racing, a positraction rear end so that both wheels give the same effort. Lockers are great for snow and mud or racing, but lockers make for a poor driving experience in regular street conditions. Just try to parallel park with lockers set.
