Saints planned to interview Mike McCarthy; McCarthy didn’t garner enough interest from Saints and will take a year off

I just don’t think the sample size is big enough. Winning Super Bowls is difficult for everyone. To single out one small subset of coaches (the rare few that have won one and then later went to another teams) and to damn them all as incapable of winning merely because of age seems silly to me.

Everyone from all walks of coaching life fails at this.

No, I get that. And that's true. The small sample size is a function of time though. Time isn't on McCarthy's side. That clock is ticking. For me it's a factor of time and motivation. Perhaps McCarthy is motivated to do it again like Payton or Belichick, but let's be honest. They're still competing against time. Even for Payton, age will become a concern. If he's lucky he may coach into his 70s like Belichick. But the difference here (and with Holmgren in Kansas City) is Belichick had that franchise QB. Holmgren HAS that. Payton and McCarthy? Maybe Payton now.

McCarthy will have to do a full rebuild, find a franchise QB and stay motivated while fighting father time. There's a small sample size because time is the biggest variable in the equation. Coaches do get past up by the game or lose the drive. The sample size isn't small accidently. This isn't the Running back cliff (there's a lot more RBs than NFL head coaches). This isn't a favorable equation for a team looking to win. It just isn't.
