Saints to interview Mike McCarthy in middle of this week, 1/26-2/1 per Pelissero [Underhill: McCarthy would have to be the current favorite]
I'm just not sure this is the idea situation for a young coach with no experience running or building a team.
If we end up with McCarthy, we could have done much worse. But the above, it just doesnt hold water.
Detroit went full rebuild. They went 3-13 in Dan Campbells first year. 9-7 in his 2nd year. 12-5. Then 15-2. He went +6, +3, +3 in wins after his first season.
He had an interim job prior, but Detroit was his first permanent HC gig.
This is a perfect opportinity for a young coach to build himself and a franchise. Its going to take energy, and drive. You can make a case both ways. A young, unproven guy will be hungry to create something. Does McCarthy have the energy to lead a rebuild at 61?
Sean Payton walked through the door in his first job as a HC, with a franchise and a city totally decimated, coming off a 3-13 season. What he faced as a rookie HC was far less ideal that what the next HC of this franchise will face.
I 1000% disagree that we have to have an old man lead this team. We need energy, ideas and hunger. Give me the younger OC over McCarthy. Let him build a name for himself along with rebuilding this franchise.
And we need to be patient with him in 2025. Its a long game. A 3-14, 4-13 2025 might be a necessity to get back to competing for Lombardis.
