Ross Jackson speculates Carr trade to Giants

So, if he moves on for any reason, Saints have $40M new on the dead cap. They're already at $41M I think so Carr would double the 2025 shirtpile. (With impacts from Ram and possibly Taysom on the way also).

If they traded Carr for a 5th, they are basically mortgaging $40M of cap space in dead cap for a 5th round pick. Oy.

I'd rather them keep him and add some to the dead cap only by restructuring him, to free up some cap space in 2025, because they are already in dead cap jail. In 2025, Carr might start, be the backup, or help out in laundry service.

As for Carr to the Giants, sounds like Ross was giving an Instructive hypothetical regarding whether a new coach wants Carr out of the building. I just think that because Daboll got lucky and was retained, I find it hard to believe he would turn to Derek Carr. A slight chance as a bridge if they draft a QB high.

No real cost-benefit to the Saints though other than to the team and fan psyche.
Carr is going to be a $40-$50m cap hit no matter what this year, unless his contract is restructured.

They way it is right now is that you can either pay him his $30m salary, $10m roster bonus and take $11m of his prorated bonus this year and have a $50m cap hit OR you can cut him and still have a $50 cap hit because he has $40m in prorated bonuses and $10m in guaranteed salary. If you keep him, it makes it about $12m cheaper to cut next year because you'd be then taking on one year less of prorated bonus in dead cap. Admittedly, we have a bit more room to do so next year. But not if we have to restructure him to get under this year. But if you move him, you take the entire hit right now and would be clear in 2026 which is my preference.
