Saints planned to interview Mike McCarthy; McCarthy didn’t garner enough interest from Saints and will take a year off

I can understand wanting some of that control after looking at the last 5 years of Saints roster management. But until Gayle decides she's going to make a change what is being requested (or rumored to have been requested) from candidate(s) it's simply not going to happen. A new coach is either going to work with Loomis or they aren't going to be the coach. And no, I am not calling for him to be fired. It's way too late for anything like that. I'm just pointing out the reality. Especially after Loomis' end of year press conference where he said they would be hiring a coach where there was alignment on the vision for the team. Which is a different thing from the FO facilitating the new coaches vision.

I can certainly understand why McCarthy would want that control considering both our lack of draft success since 2017 and the situation he had in Dallas. And maybe it would be a good thing for the Saints. I just don't know if McCarthy would be better at it than what we have now. Although I will say that I have long wished that they would move on from Jeff Ireland as the head of college scouting and the guy in de facto control of our drafts.

At the same point, IIRC, Ron Wolf had full control of the Packers when McCarthy was there and Jerry clearly had full control in Dallas so I'm not sure if McCarthy is the guy you want to give full control over you personnel decisions and drafting. But it is tempting considering how at best mediocre our drafting has been since 2017.
