He only holds all the leverage if McCarthy is the top pick of the team and I'm not sure he is. I think right now, Moore is the top pick and he may have been ever since Glenn took the Jets job. If McCarthy was the top choice, it seems they would have interviewed him long ago and according to Underhill, it has been McCarthy's people lobbying to get him the job. If he sits out a year at his age, he may keep getting passed up for younger coordinators and never get another HC job.

He holds all the leverage in his eyes. What I mean by that is I don’t think he would be too sad to not coach this year. So he holds all the cards from that angle. I didn’t mean all the cards to like leverage more money or anything. However, he absolutely can go in with the attitude of we are going to do it my way, or not at all. Which is likely exactly what happened.
