Mike Florio bringing the proper perspective to our organization: “Saints are a solid long-term destination for a new coach“

It's not really an unattractive job. Most teams looking for coaches are coming off seasons at near the bottom of the standings. The cap situation is over-blown again this year as usual. Saints sign players to contracts that have automatic contract reworks built in. Every year we end the season millions over the cap and by the deadline, we're good. Now a case can be made for giving big contracts to aging and declining players. Another case can be made that lean to heavy on void years making dead cap a real problem. But being 60 million above the cap in February is part of the strategy. It only ever bit us when covid knocked the cap back to the 20th century. We have this same panic every end of season.

Gayle is not going to tell a coach what to do. Mickey doesn't seem to be too active in the clubhouse and also tends to get players for his coach. A HC coming here will undoubtedly start with a bad winning percentage, but it'll be his team to build and run. I can't imagine the guy not at least getting a 2 year grace period to turn things around. Show marked improvement, a clear vision, and have the team on an upward trajectory and you get a year 3. No coach in any situation could ask for more than 3 years to produce.

Roster isn't dregs. There's still some life in it, but it needs a lot of work. Any new coach is going to want to build his team. He can do that here without the front office meddling like we hear about in other organizations. There's only 32 of these jobs and obviously you can flat out stink your first go at it and still somehow potentially get another shot down the road. Yeah, this is a desirable job. Don't let the PR-driven exits, pull-outs, and not interested talk fool you. MM wanted this job. Kingsbury wanted this job, etc... Brady actually might not feel he's ready to be HC. I could understand feeling that way. He's still earning his name as a coordinator and it's very early in his career.

Keep spending! What could go wrong?
