Kellen Moore expected to be Saints coach
He's our speed guy mostly. It's not like he has some crazy route tree. On most teams he's a WR3. And that's not a knock on him. Good for him for taking advantage of his opportunities because we sure needed him. But we need a WR4 too because we have no WR1 and WR2 has an oft injured brain. None of the other guys had shown anything at all at the time Perry was cut. I do see similar potential for Bub Means though so maybe he can be out WR4. He was showing up a bit with Rattler before he got hurt.
It's not a crazy route tree, but it's more than he could run coming out of college and he has became much better timing when to break on the post route in order to split two high safeties. But, sure, in an ideal world, Shaheed is WR 3.
But I think Means is already a much better WR than Perry is ever going to be. Maybe in the new system Perry would have been useful but in the scheme Kubiak ran, with so many 12 personnel, we seldom had more than one WR on the field and those receiver have to been very good route runners for the Shanahan/Kubiak system to work. That just isn't Perry's game. I mean, Perry got beat out by a rookie 5th round pick and an UDFA that didn't even play in preseason. Maybe he was just in DA's dog house like Miller, but nobody claiming him after he was cut tells me a lot. And frankly, if Moore, or whoever the new HC is, likes Perry they can probably claim him on waivers after Denver cuts him to put him on the PS or sign him once he is on the PS.
And the most important thing is that if he can't learn the plays and runs wrong routes, you can't put him on the field in any system. That was the case last year.
Anyway, the apparent reason for cutting Perry was to try to put him on the PS because they needed roster spots due to all the injuries. Maybe that was a mistake by DA, but there were not a lot of options at the time. And then Perry refused to sign to our PS, choosing to go to Denver. I don't really think it's a big loss because I think Means is better and we are starting over anyway. But I could be wrong and maybe Perry develops into something. But, I just don't see it.
