I read in interviews with some members of his band talking about how humbling it was

You're hired to play X in Prince's band and Prince on his worst day plays X better than you ever did

The story I heard about Prince's Guitar Gently Weeps solo was not long prior to that (day before?) someone put out a list of top 100 guitarists of all time and Prince wasn't even listed

So that performance was done in anger, a "fork you" to whoever put that list together
