Saints hire Kellen Moore as head coach

I’m a/ you Roux. From a logical standpoint Staley makes so much sense. Former failed HC who is a disciple of the Fangio scheme. Likely won’t get poached for another HC job for a while.

However the research I did suggest he may not teach his scheme as well as Fangio does, and the spacing in his pass coverage concepts tends to put the secondary in bad leverage positions.

Or maybe the coaches he hired did t do a good job, and the Dline didn’t get enough b gap pressure to make the scheme come alive

Supposedly this was why his Chargers defense failed so much on 3rd downs.

I read where he mostly helped the 49ers Defense w/ their 3rd down packages so that may be a good place to start.

How good or bad were the 49ers on 3rd last year?
I saw similar info on the spacing issues, and I thought about a post that I think you made about a lot of DC's being DB coaches by trade. Staley was a LB coach at the pro level, so maybe he doesn't quite grasp all the nuances of the coverage systems that Fangio likes to use. If he has a strong understanding of the finer details, maybe he doesn't know how to adapt the system to different personnel.

By DVOA, the 49ers were middle of the pack on defending 3rd down, 15th overall. They finished 7th overall in 2023.

Staley's former team was 10th this season under Harbaugh after being 18th in 2023.
