Mike Garafolo: Saints are set to make a decision on Derek Carr within the next few weeks; likely to have multiple suitors if released

The takes on both sides are soooo extreme. Carr is not terrible, nor is he great. He’s average. He doesn’t often turn the ball over, but he doesn’t do much spectacular, either. He’s not a running QB, but he isn’t a statue, either.

To me, the “What to do about Cart?” dilemma has at least a first step in its solution: have an open competition in OTAs and training camp. Then make an informed decision about who the starter should be. Trading or cutting him right now is a very poor option.

The obvious flaw in this scenario is that we don’t know whether or not the Saints will grab a FA QB or trade for one, or draft one. One of those actions would change the picture.
Normally I would agree with just letting QBs compete. But the team does have to make some choices that have to be made before we ever get to a competition. Choices that have repercussions that go beyond the QB position and they can't just ride his contract out. His contract is a major complication because it effects the entire off season roster plan. The team can't just leave it alone. Something will be done before March 15th when his full 2025 salary becomes guaranteed. They will either have to kick his cap into next year or they will have to cut him. Trading him isn't a real option because he has no incentive to waive his no trade clause.

So when people are talking about it, it's really not that extreme. Some want to kick the can one more time and others want to cut him now and start fresh. I fall on the latter side of wanting to start fresh because it closes the door on the DA era and begins a new era.
